Day 40 - Flagstaff, Twin Arrows

We wake up in Flagstaff to a winter wonderland. We decide to stay another day. There's adventuring afoot.

There are several conferences in town - including the Desert Fishes Conference - we keep running into the attendees all over our hotel. We suspect these are some of the desert fishes scientists - heading back to confer after a morning coffee break. They're tough - no connecting walkway for these hardy souls.

Snow is brighter, but grass is better.

Snow coffee - yes, we really sat outside for our morning cup'a. At Macy's - where else?

My jaw dropped when I saw this one. On further investigation, we learn the Downtowner has probably not offered this rate since 1955.

The World Famous Death Ray Alley.

Russ is excitedly picking out all sorts of new kitchen bits at this downtown Flagstaff hyper cook shop.

They call this colour Primo Yellow. Yes, Nissan calls it that.

We didn't eat here - but the sign is awesome.

All of Arizona is swamp after yesterday's floods.

Wonders never cease - that must be one special pick up truck bed.

We venture into the elements to check out the Route 66 outpost of Twin Arrows - forgotten once its contemporary counterpart Casino opened on the other side of the interstate.

A peek in the window. It's also a peek into something else.

There they are - the twin arrows - the only outpost relic that's actually been restored.

Who's Seizer?

Is this Seizer?

It's been a while since the hamburgers flowed out this door. But it's fun to imagine a very different era.

Heading back to Flagstaff - we encounter the storms once again.

The landscape is cold and snowy here - only 10 miles back at Twin Arrows - it's cold but dry. So unpredictable!

Walking around the campus of Northern Arizona University after dark, we find these footprints outside the Experimental Genetics Laboratory. We wonder why nobody else walks around NAU after dark.

It's better to just hang out by the fireplace in the campus conference center.
